We carry out tests and measurements of equipment for fisheries, aquaculture, offshore installations and subsea technologies in the largest flume tank in Europe.

We produce and optimize scale models and with the largest possible accuracy, we contribute to assuring the quality of our customers finished product, to the benefit of our customers, their customers and the marine environment.

The Flume Tank is also used for educational purposes, training, courses and demonstration of gear to customers.

We participate in innovative research and development projects in collaboration with scientists and customers.

The Flume Tank in Hirtshals is the largest flume and wave tank in Europe

The facility is owned by the North Sea Science Park and as of 1 October 2023 managed and operated by the subsidiary, Flume Tank North Sea A/S
  • Gross measure: 30 x 6 x 8 m
  • Internal measure: 21,3 x 8 x 2,7 m
  • Volume: 1, 2 mio. L of freshwater
  • Currents up to 1 m/s
  • Auditorium with 60 seats
  • 120 sqm windows with total clarity
  • Wave Generator, regular waves up to 25 cm, irregular waves up to 20 cm
  • Subsea cameras in tank and videolink
  • Netmaker workshop – highly skilled netmakers
  • Specialized competencies within trawl, nets, gillnets, Danish and Scottish seines, hydrodynamics, scale modelling, calculations
  • Specialized range of software, such as CADTrawl (R Kurt Hansen) for calculations and simulations (CATS), AwaSys, WaveLab and QualiSys.
  • Cooperation with DTU Aqua and Aalborg University
  • Located at the North Sea Science Park in Hirtshals, close to the Port of Hirtshals, the North Sea, the industry and accommodation in walking distance. 45 minutes from Aalborg Airport.
